Wikipedia says that the question "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" is a metaphor for "wasting time debating topics of no practical value." To me, it seems like a good metaphor for painting.
Painting can feel trying to dance while balanced on a very
small point. You have to move with freedom and grace while keeping a lot of
rules in mind (even as you prepare to reject them), pay close attention (but
not too much), and remain poised to stop, shift, or even reverse yourself at
any given moment. More often than not, I can't make it work. But it's fun to
try!
